Dr. Han and Dr. Giurini co-developed the Han–Giurini Model™ for Diabetic Limb Preservation, an evidence-based, symptom-focused, and multilingual educational approach designed to help reduce preventable diabetes-related amputations across diverse communities.
Why this collaboration matters
Recent actions by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reflect a growing recognition that treating diabetic foot wounds after they occur is insufficient to achieve sustainable improvements in outcomes or costs. Advanced wound therapies are often deployed only after ulcers have already developed—when complications, hospitalizations, and amputation risk are substantially higher.
In contrast, prevention-focused strategies—such as risk-stratified foot evaluations, timely podiatric intervention, and culturally and linguistically appropriate patient education—address the root drivers of infection, hospitalization, and lower-extremity amputation.
The Han–Giurini Model™ was developed in direct response to this need, aligning clinical evidence with evolving national and global priorities in prevention, health equity, and improved long-term outcomes.
